In what can only be described as a seismic development on the landscape of Ibiza clubland, the much respected We Love promoter, Darren Hughes, is rumoured to be ending his business relationship with Space. The blog understands that Hughes will walk away from Space this season and bring his iconic We Love party to Sankeys on Wednesday nights. Sankeys owner David Vincent and Danny Whittle were recently pictured with Hughes in an April 1 publicity stunt and it would appear from well connected sources in Ibiza, that a Sankeys/We Love partnership will become a reality this season. Previous rumours right up to last week, were suggesting that the new Luciano residency at Space on Sundays, would be known as We Love Vagabundos but with the departure of Darren Hughes, the party could well have a new name. Vincent, Whittle and Hughes would make a formidable team at Sankeys.
When Will We See Them Again?
Over the past two seasons, Darren Hughes has been hinting that when Pepe Rosello's lease on Space expired in 2016, he would re-evaluate the We Love residency. Already Mark Broadbent and Carl Cox's manager, Lynn Cosgrove, have departed We Love and recent rumours were suggesting that Disclosure, James Zabiela, Heidi, Paul Woolford and Simian Mobile Disco would follow suit. The recent exodus would lend weight to the rumour that Hughes is about to end his 17 year relationship with Space. It was expected that We Love would hang in with Space until the club changed management in 2016, but a sudden departure this season, would suggest that there were unresolved creative differences between Space and We Love. A departure of Darren Hughes, would also suggest that the Matutes family who own Ushuaia, are set to take over the running of the club next year.
It is expected that they will bring a Spanish style to Space and it could work alongside its daytime venue, Ushuaia, to offer a 12 hour non stop party experience. In 2013, Ushuaia trialed a dual ticket between Luciano at Ushuaia and Enter at Space. Home and the We Love Sundays at Space, was regarded as an institution on the island and its halcyon days were 1999 to 2006, when the terrace was open to the skies. Much has changed in Ibiza since Hughes first arrived promoting the Cream party at Ku in 1994, different times when it was more about the music than the money. A departure of We Love from Space would signal the end of a golden era in Ibiza.
